Whether you are approaching retirement age or just thinking about the future, you should consider a few basic steps to start the conversation about retirement savings.
- The first thing to do is to write down your biggest financial goals and how you want to prioritize them. Ask yourself questions and create a priority list. For example, when do you want to retire? What kind of a lifestyle do you want to have?
- If you are going to seek the advice of a financial advisor, make up a list of questions for when you meet with them. This way you make the best use of your time and their experience. The CFP® board has a great set of questions to ask an advisor which you can access here.
- American Funds put out this resource to help people prepare for a meeting with an advisor, and I encourage you to take a look at it.
- Be sure to gather any necessary documents to bring to your meeting. They won’t be able to get into specifics without an accurate picture of your financial situation.
Cheers!
